Afton walked into his office and sat down on his old, creaky chair. He had only recently returned to the school. Of course, he found it completely covered in dust, with spiderwebs making unwelcome appearances in almost every doorway. His office seemed to be even worse for wear. Even Afton was feeling the effects of a few more years. Bags had begn to form under his eyes and his stature had taken to a small slump. He felt himself getting older and he could not say that it was enjoyable. After a few minutes, his eyes fluttered close and he layed his head on his desk, absolutely exhausted.

Rosie braved her way through the spider ridden castle chastising herself for not cleaning it better, but it was very big and she was very afraid of spiders. Shuddering and muttering spells she wound the halls almost crying in relief as she saw the door she wanted. She hesitated a second before knocking. Afton had not sent for her nor had he told her he was coming home. In fact her Kneezle Greymalkin had discovered the sleeping headmaster while he was hunting fat mice in the halls the night before. When he returned to her near by home he had conveyed his find to her. She had waited for the morning to see if Afton would contact her but around 10 am her patients ran out and she kissed her babies, (not really babies anymore) handed them to their nanny and headed for the castle. And that is how we came to find her here her small fist paused midair before the door debating whether to let it fall to her side or fall to the wood. The wood won out and her gentle knock rang out through the empty hall.

Afton had been dreaming of Death Eaters and dark caves, a reoccurring dream that seemed to have found a comfortable home in his subconscious. Just as he was about to be dragged into the cave by a cloaked figure, a scene he knew all too well but never seemed to expect, he awoke to a rapping on his door. With groggy eyes that looked as bloodshot as a pair of eyes could be before actually bleeding, he arose from his desk. He knew that the knocker was Rosie. No one was around anymore but her, and he knew that. For anyone else, he probably would not have even gotten up. But she was probably wondering where he had been lately, and she was probably not too happy about his absence for it had left her to do all of the work. Afton put his hand to the doorknob and sighed deeply. He opened the solid oak door and before he had even set his gaze on Rosie, he motioned for her to come in. "I expect that I have some explaining to do..." he said vaguely and sat in the beaten chair behind his desk.

Rosie sucked in her breath as the door swung open, the man on the other side looked beaten and unwell. His apathetic voice sounded more then tired and unhappy it was tinged with something..Defeat maybe? Rosie hoped not as this was the man they all counted on, it was unfair of them perhaps but it was the truth. They all in their hearts expected that he would find the way to save them. Stepping through the door and viewing her friend a little closer Rosie shook those thoughts from her head. He didn't need more accusations or expectations he need compassion and understanding, he needed a friend and ally, he needed her whether he knew it or not. She pulled out her wand and in the three steps it took to reach his desk his room was clean and there was a fire in the grate, in the second it took to move a chair next to him his clothes and self were as clean as her magic could make him. And in the moment she took to hug him and take his hand there was hot tea, spiced mead and steaming cottage pie before him. "Eat first Explanations second" she commanded handing him a fork with her free hand.

Afton took the fork and began to pick at the food that had been placed before him. He felt sickly and did not feel as though he could stomach any food, but he knew that Rosie wanted him to try. He took his fork and mixed the cottage pie around. Eventually he took a small piece and placed it in his mouth. "Rosie..." he said after he had finished chewing the bite of pie. "Have you ever been in so much agony that you feel as though life isn't even worth the time anymore?" he asked her, shocking even himself. He stood up from his chair and walked around his desk and sat himself down in a softer resting place.
He knew that she must be wondering what he meant, so he continued. "For the past year I've been in Austria...there were reports of four fatal magical incidents within just an hour. They could not find the attacker and I was brought in. I tried to send you an owl to tell you of my leave, but she was constantly blocked for security reasons. I was just able to get back about three days ago." Afton laid back against the chair and closed his eyes. "Not to worry. I'm alright...twenty-four Death Eaters were arrested while hiding out in a small bungalow near the northern boundary...but I'm so exhausted. And I know that the constant barrage of magical spells has taken its toll on me. I really do not know how much longer I can last in this post." he explained.

Rosie nodded along resisting the urge to shove the food down his throat. "Don't feel bad" she assured him as he told her why he was unable to write "I knew you couldn't it was for a good reason" or that you were dead she thought to herself with a shudder before she was able to push those thoughts away. Looking at him she realised she didn't have enough words to express her feelings over his story, he was off doing something hard and noble as she sat minding the school and worrying, not a very equal task. She wondered if he resented her for having such an easy task.
As she heard what he was saying she felt panic rising...Hogwarts with out Afton? Was this possible? No she didn't think so but as she watched him move away from her and find a softer place to sit she found herself wordless. She gripped her seat hard to prevent herself from flinging herself at his feet and begging him to stay. she struggled to control her facial expression and her voice as she looked for the right words..."Afton..." she paused how very selfish she was to want him to stay if he was too tired and needed to leave..."I...I....." her voice wavered and tears pricked her heavily lashed green eyes "I...I can't be selfish enough to ask you to stay but I can't be selfless enough to just let you go...." she trialed off unable to say anything else or look him in the face.
